The Garden/Books

In Praise of Slowness: Challenging the Cult of Speed — Carl Honore

  • Great depth, but boring and repetitive style. Also a bit sensationalist. A few good gems can be found if you power through it.

Small Pleasures — Alain de Botton

  • Lovely book, summing up in a simple and unpretentious way the joys of things like driving late at night, a beloved’s wrist, swimming in the sea or holding a small child’s hand.

The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking — Oliver Burkeman

  • I always liked Burkeman's column on The Guardian, even before the burnout. There wasn't a lot of new ideas for me on this book, but It is a well rounded study of how to get out the self-improving treadmill.
